Get Free Help This Tax Season with Prepare + Prosper!

1. Get your taxes prepared for free. Taxes are prepared by IRS-certified volunteers and double-checked for accuracy. Volunteers prepare federal and Minnesota tax returns, including property tax refunds for renters and homeowners.

2. Receive your refund faster. Direct deposit is the fastest and safest way to get your refund. Bring your routing and account numbers to tax preparation or schedule an appointment to open a checking account or prepaid debit card before you get your taxes prepared.

3. Take a step toward your financial goals. Volunteers will connect you with resources to help you reach your financial goals, whether your goal is increasing savings, boosting credit, or reducing debt.

In-Person Drop-Off Prep at Hallie Q. Brown Community Center

In-person drop-off services are available on a very limited basis and by appointment only.

  • Call (651) 287-0187 to make an appointment for a phone screening AND a time to drop off your documents at Hallie Q. Brown Community Center.
  • During drop-off, your documents will be uploaded to a secure online platform and then returned to you.
  • Once notified, you’ll return to sign and pick up your completed tax return(s).

Other Free Options for Tax Prep

  • Do It Yourself Prep
    • Have you ever wanted to do your own taxes? Prepare them yourself online for free with the help of our Self-Prep Guide and/or free online training sessions to get you started.
    • Visit prepareandprosper.org for the Self-Prep Guide and to sign up for an online training session.
    • Visit revenue.state.mn.us and type “Free File” in the search field for a list of free software options available through the IRS’s Free File program.
  • Virtual Tax Prep
    • Virtual tax prep is by appointment only. Visit prepareandprosper.org or call (651) 287-0187 to make an appointment.
    • For your appointment, meet your preparer in a virtual room on the Zoom platform.
    • Your preparer will use a secure virtual mailbox to send and receive paperwork, and have you sign your return(s).
  • Self-Employment Prep
    • Tax preparation for the self-employed will be offered virtually by appointment only. Schedule a self-employment tax appointment at (651) 262-2169.
    • Schedule only if your annual self-employment income is greater than $6,000.

Due to COVID-19, all tax preparation is appointment only. No walk-in availability. The health and and safety of customers, staff, and volunteers is a priority. Prepare + Prosper is following COVID-19 safety guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Minnesota Department of Health.

Do you qualify?

Annual income qualifications*:

  • Individuals = $35,000
  • Families = $55,000
  • Self-Employed = $55,000 or less

*Prepare + Prosper aren’t able to do your taxes if you have income from driving a cab, rental income, or filed bankruptcy in the tax year you wish to file. There are also other, less common situations that are out of scope. If you are unsure whether Prepare + Prosper can do your taxes, please call (651) 287-0817.
