In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the U.S. Senate passed S. 475, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the companion bill, H.R. 1320, with 415-14 votes in favor. The bill is now headed to President Biden’s desk and plans to sign the bill into law this afternoon.
Juneteenth is this Saturday, June 19. The YWCA of Saint Paul will be located in Boyd Park to celebrate and acknowledge Juneteenth, a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. This event is free and open to all. There will be food trucks available as well as free music and entertainment, including T. Mychael Rambo and Thomasina Petrus.
Our preschoolers have officially graduated from Hallie Q. Brown Community Center’s Early Learning Center! Congratulations to the class of 2021 and thank you to community members and @saintpaulfirefightersunited for making this day so special for our little ones!

We have nine preschoolers graduating from Hallie Q. Brown Community Center this Thursday, June 10 but we’re $800 short from reaching our $2,500 goal! Bayard Rustin was a civil rights activist, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., and one of the main organizers of the 1963 March on Washington. Rustin also directed the 1964 New York City school boycott, highlighting racial discrimination in public schools and was also apart of the gay rights movement. His activism was often kept in the shadows due to his sexuality.
