Project Superhero

Students from a local elementary school carrying bags of food they collected for the Hallie Q. Brown Food Shelf during the March Campaign. The theme is “Be a Hero in the Fight Against Hunger.”

Mission

To utilize the medium of comic books and the subject of superheroes as a teaching/mentoring tool to engage at-risk youth in an alternative path to antisocial behavior and all youth in literacy, civic engagement and social development through a program that promotes positive values, education and violence prevention in an easily accessible format.

Project Superhero originated out of the observation that nearly every successful African American man grew up reading comic books regardless of socio-economic background, hometown or profession.  The theory was derived that the ideas contained within the medium and the ease of access transcended racial, cultural and economic lines and therefore could be used as a means of leveling the playing field and empowering those most in need with an expanded vision and opportunity to support their success.
