Welcome to the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center website

July 8, 2010

Dear Friends of Hallie Q. Brown,

There is no spoon…

...or fork or plate or even food to feed families in the community for there is no Food Shelf.

There is no Early Learning Center to properly prepare young children for kindergarten.  No After School and Summer Enrichment program providing the extra support, guidance and mentorship for our elementary and junior high school students.  There is no Project Voice to keep our children from slipping through the cracks. No place to gather and meet. No place to connect to the programs, organizations and resources that serve our community…

Imagine, if you will, that there is no Hallie Q…

There was a time, not to long ago when this might have been the case, where an organization which had served the community for 80 years might have ceased to be, leaving our seniors, our children, our families left by the wayside; a house without a home, a life without living, a world without Hallie Q.

Two years later, our families are engaged, our programs improved and our Center, the Lighthouse of the Community, has been reignited.

Today, I can look to our 4-Star rating from Parent Aware as evidence that the children who come through our ELC are prepared for kindergarten and beyond.

Today, I can look at our Food Shelf using the Client Choice model that allows families to choose the food they need and our partnerships that provide fresh produce, bread and even pet food above their allowance ensuring they do not to have to choose between feeding their pet or feeding themselves.

Today, I can look at ASP/SC youth who are the children of youth who came through our ASP/SC, returning because their parents gained so much.

I don’t have to imagine, because it’s there, I don’t have to wonder, because it’s true. Today, the dream still exists and it is Hallie Q.

And I’d like to share it with you.  Please join us Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Rondo Days Festival for an Open House  to celebrate “the New Hallie Q.” and walk through our restored space, visit with our board, staff and volunteers and learn about our current programming and renewed commitment to the community.  A brief  program at 2pm will highlight our funders, supporters and volunteers, the history of Hallie Q. Brown Community Center and our plans for the future.

Respectfully,

Jonathan

P.S.  I welcome your input and questions at jpalmer@hallieqbrown.org.  In addition, Hallie Q. Brown is a 501©3 tax-exempt organization.  Your contribution is tax deductible and very much appreciated in these challenging economic times.  Thank you.

Extreme Community Center Makeover - Hallie Q. Brown Edition

Part of our work over the past two years has been making the Center a better place.  New policies, programs and procedures are only a part of the  reigniting of our Lighthouse, doing what's necessary to make sure our environment is inviting and welcoming is also a large part or the work and a great undertaking.  With that in mind, HQB staff, their family members and volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help give the Center a "makeover" and breathe new life into it.  When you join us on Saturday, July 17th at Rondo Days, you'll be able to see the new changes, but clicking here will take you to the photo album so you can see the hard work that went into the making of "The New Hallie Q".
